10 gigabits and beyond

USC pioneered efforts to obtain metropolitan fiber to create a new, more flexible, regional network and led Los Nettos’ efforts to create a fiber footprint for Los Nettos member connections. Local internet exchanges sprang up after the dot com bust and the creation of Pacific Wave allowed research and educational institutions to extend their peers to other regional networks across the ocean.

  • 2002 – Los Nettos begins upgrades to 10-gigabit backbone.
  • 2003 – The Claremont Colleges becomes a member of Los Nettos.
  • 2004 – Los Nettos joins Pacific Wave.
  • 2006 – Loyola Marymount University becomes a member of Los Nettos.
  • 2006 – Los Nettos joins Any2 exchange at One Wilshire.
  • 2007 – LAAP exchange transitioned to CIIX exchange.
  • 2007 – Los Nettos upgrades its peering and transit hardware.
  • 2008 – Los Nettos celebrates its 20th year of operation.
  • 2011 – Occidental College becomes a member of Los Nettos.
  • 2012 – The long awaited optical upgrade gets underway.
  • 2013 – Los Nettos celebrates its 25th year of operation.
